"We feel 5 percent is reason-
able since we volunteered to
freeze our salary last year," said
Shula Fleischer, president of the
teachers union. "We figured 5
percent for two years isn't out-
rageous. It will barely cover the
increase in the cost of living."
According to their contract, the
teachers need to present their
proposals by the end of March for

one if we had a definite date for
when school will open," said Vi-
vian Honig, a Farmington Hills
resident with a second-grade
daughter attending Hillel. "It
would be nice to know for the
children's sake. Both sides have
rights and responsibilities. We've
seen the letters, and I can't com-
ment on who's right and who is
wrong."
In 1992, teachers staged
a week-long strike over
salary issues.
Teachers were hoping
not to resort to a strike this
time.
"It's not a good way to
have a relationship between
us," said Ms. Fleischer, a
Hillel teacher for 21 years.
"We're not like the public
schools. We're part of a com-
munity. I see my students
and their parents at syna-
gogue and the supermarket.
We live in the same neigh-
borhood. A public-school
teacher doesn't see his or
her students unless it's in
the classroom."

a contract that ends the follow-
ing August. Ms. Fleischer said
the teachers association sat
down with the school's former
president, Robert Schostak, in
June 1995 to work out details of
the contract by January 1996,
before the 1996-97 school-year
budget was set.
By September 1995, the as-
sociation had turned in its pro-
posals.
"We didn't hear from them,"
Ms. Fleischer said. "We called at
the end of December and met at
the end of February. That's a
waste of five months and we're
still not finished."
Negotiations broke offin June
on the last day of the 1995-96
school year.
Board president Dr. Marcy
Borofsky maintained that ne-
gotiations are continuing and
had no further comment. Head-
master Dr. Mark Smiley could
not be reached for comment.
The rift leaves students and
parents unsure of when the
school year will begin.

Teachers at Hillel are paid ac-
cording to a--step scale that's
based on an educator's work ex-
perience and degrees earned.
Those with a bachelor's degree
make between $23,000 and
$42,900. Teachers with a mas-
ter's degree can earn between
$25,500 and $47,100.
Hillel teachers make approx-
imately $15,000 to $20,000 less
than public-school educators, ac-
cording to Ms. Fleischer. These
estimates don't include entry-
level positions.
In the board's letter to par-
ents, however, an argument is
made that Hillel teachers are
among the highest-paid private-
school teachers in the area. ❑
