TELEPHONE COUNSELING

For smokers who want to kick
the habit, help could be as close
as a phone call.
A new study published in a re-
cent issue of the Journal of Con-
sulting and Clinical Psychology
reveals that telephone counsel-
ing can help smokers quit and ab-
stain from smoking. Telephone
counseling is accessible, conve-
nient and private, which is why
many smokers who would not or-
dinarily seek out counseling find
it appealing.
Researchers at the University
of California at San Diego divid-
ed 3,030 smokers who wanted to
quit into three groups for differ-
ent types of counseling: low-in-
tensity counseling (just one
telephone session before they ac-
tually quit), high-intensity coun-
seling (one session before quitting
and up to five sessions after) or a
self-help kit with no telephone
counseling.
Smokers who received the
most counseling had the lowest
rate of relapse and abstained for
longer periods of time overall.
However, even those who only
had a single telephone session be-
fore quitting had a better rate of
success than the self-help group.

TARGETED TREATMENT

All allergy sufferers are not
created equal at least in terms
of how they should be treated,
say experts at the University of
California at Los Angeles School
of Medicine. Children, the elder-
ly and athletes are three groups
that require different care.
Therefore, the UCLA School
of Medicine's Office of Continu-
ing Medical Education has re-
leased a set of guidelines to give
physicians recommended thera-
pies for these groups, including
the genetic and environmental
factors that can provoke or wors-
en symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
"Because each of these groups
has very special needs, their
management and treatment
needs to be individualized," says
Sheldon Spector, M.D., clinical
professor of medicine at UCLA.
"In young children, for example,
medication dosage should be pre-
scribed according to their size."
Allergies also may be more
prevalent in kids who were for-
mula-fed, had a low birth weight
or were exposed to dogs, cats
and/or tobacco smoke early in life.
Athletes with allergies may ex-
perience nasal congestion, and
women may find that allergic
rhinitis symptoms worsen dur-
ing pregnancy. For older aller-
gy suffers, treatment should be
tailored to accommodate a slow-
er metabolism and potential side
effects and/or interactions with
other medications. El
