In the coming months, we are likely to be bombarded with more bombast — and potential violence — from the Israel-Palestinian theater of negotiations. And if those talks fall apart, a result of obstinancy on both sides, it will be the defeat of the ultimate purpose of this historic reproach- ment. That is, Israeli and Amer- ican Jews will fail their shared challenge: creating a broad-based Jewish identity that will survive r,--/ the challenges of a world where immigrant memories, the Holo- caust and a beseiged Israel have little hold on most Jews. For us, collapse of the peace talks means that we will keep spending more dollars on public relations campaigns about the need to support Israel than on (-) promoting the study of Jewish history, text and philosophy, ef- forts critical to building a lasting Jewish identity. It will also hinder our struggle to convince Israelis that without adapting our tenuous balance of religious pluralism and innova- tions in Jewish education, Jew- c± ish identity in Israel itself is doomed. So here's a quick rundown of newest bumps in the always frag- ile Middle East peace process. Palestinian Authority head Yassir Arafat is upset with recent pronouncements from Israel's Likud government about the ex- panding of existing settlements and the construction of new bridges and roads in the West Bank and Gaza strip. For Mr. Arafat to declare the Israeli moves "flagrant violations" of the Israel-PLO accords is fair game. But he pulled the prover- bial pin out of the hand grenade by adding that they must be re- sisted by "all means" and that "the most important thing is to confront this demon that swal- lows up everything." This is simply an open call for violence. So much for his "peace of the brave." If Mr. Arafat wants American Jews such as I to keep pressing the U.S. government to assist his efforts, he needs to cut it out. Such incendiary words only strengthen those who oppose pushing this process forward. Mr. Arafat is responsible for creating the psycholgy of the next generation of Palestinians. They must be given a legacy of political compromise over one of violent confrontation. Mr. Arafat should spend more time floating trial bal-
