A kosher chicken empire stakes out new
territory in cyberspace.

I is warm, it's July and it's mid-
night in Evansville, Ind.,
when a kosher-keeping, cyber-
surfing, apparent insomniac
becomes totally verklempt over
where to find pre-packaged
kosher deli products. What is he
to do?
Well, click on the search en-
gine that will take him to the
World Wide Web site for Empire
Kosher Poultry Inc., of course.
The scenario has actually al-
ready happened, said Birgitta
Wade, director of marketing for
the world's largest kosher poul-
try processing plant. A little more
than a month into the existence
of the Web site and the company
has answered that query as well
as many others from the 1,200
visitors who've stopped by the
site.
The company decided to go the
Internet route in an effort to
reach sophisticated Web
browsers, people who wouldn't
mind modeming them at night
but wouldn't phone them during
daylight hours.
"We felt there were people we
weren't reaching," Ms. Wade
said.
Although she wouldn't reveal
any exact figures, she said the
cost to the company was "prac-
tically nothing" for a response
that has been "amazing." The
company plans to update the site
weekly, taking improvement
suggestions from the users.
The Web site currently fea-
tures coupons, a tour listing for
the processing plant, a nutri-
tional service that tinkers with
recipes, a monthly contest for
recipes and entries for a sweep-
stakes, with a grand prize of a
trip to Israel.
One of the most popular fea-
tures is the "Ask the Rabbi" por-
tion. Here, visitors can ask
kashrut questions of the at-
tending rabbi. Answers are gen-
erally e-mailed back within a
day.
An effort to reach
sophisticated
Web browsers.
"Our turnaround time is very
quick," Ms. Wade said. "We are
pretty good about that."
The site also features uplinks
to other kosher- or cooking-re-
lated Web sites. For example, two
mouse clicks on one page sweep
the visitor from Empire Kosher
to the Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America (OU) c-=/\
page on the Web.
