Wendy Wagenheim, legislative
affairs director of the American
Civil Liberties Union of Michi-
gan, will speak on "The Electoral
Process: How Will We Be Heard
in November" at the next Sin-
gles Shabbat, 8:30 p.m. Friday,
Aug. 23, at Congregation Beth
Achim.
Prior to joining the ACLU
staff, Ms. Wagenheim was the
state public affairs chairwoman
for the National Council of Jew-
ish Women and is a member of
its national board. The Shabbat
service for singles is sponsored
by the Michigan Board of Rab-
bis in cooperation with The Jew-
ish News and the Community
Outreach and Education De-
partment of the Jewish Federa-
tion of Metropolitian Detroit.

United Synagogue Youth wel-
comes home participants from
the 40th Annual Summer Israel
Pilgrimage Programs. These
youth participated in a six-and-
a-half week trip. Michigan par-
ticipants included: Beverly Betel,
Shoshanna Cohen, Marcia Gor-
don, Michael E. Schostak,
Michael Sternberg, Carrie Taub
and Rachel Weiss on the
Poland/Israel Pilgrimage; Laura
Grey on the Israel Pilgrimage;
Esther Nelson, Jelene Pitkin,
Cara Rosenthal and Beth
Schwartz on the Italy/Israel Pil-
grimage; and Devra Wanetik on
Etgar (Israel).
USY-On-Wheels, for teens
from the United States and
Canada, is returning from a sum-
mer touring the USA. Michigan
participants include: Rob Kogan,
Michael Schostak, Evan Salama
and Leah Weiss.

Congregation Shir Tikvah's Troy
Area Temple Youth (TATY)
elected a new board for 1996-
1997. The incoming officers
are: president Jeremy
Jutkowitz; vice presidents, Ben
Turbow, Sarah Littman, Jacob
Davidson, Katie Rose; secretary,
Marissa Wengrow; and treasur-
er, Eric Singer.
Toddler Classes
At Beth Hayeled
The Beth Hayeled Nursery
School will add three new class-
es for toddlers ages 15-30
months.There will be a class on
Wednesday afternoons from 4-
5 p.m. which will begin Sept. 18,
and one on Sunday from 10-11
a.m. and another Sunday class
for bubbies and zaydes and
"grand-toddlers" from 11 a.m.-
noon. Both Sunday classes be-
gin on Sunday Oct. 13. These
classes will be held at the Eu-
gene and Marcia Applebaum
Center in West Bloomfield.
Class size is limited.
Shaarey Zedek will have a
"Discover-Gan," a supplement
program for kindergarten stu-
dents. The class meets in the af-
ternoon and is available two,
three or five times each week.
This program will be available
on a first-come basis for students
in public or private kinder-
gartens. The Discover-Gan will
meet in the West Bloomfield cen-
ter.

Rummage Sale
Congregation Beth Shalom Sis-
terhood is planning a rummage
sale before the renovation of the
building. The dates are: Sunday,
Aug. 18, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Monday,
Aug. 19, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and
Tuesday Aug. 20, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Zamir Chorale
Elects Leaders
The Zamir Chorale of metropol-
itan Detroit recently elected its
officers and board members for
1996-97. The chorale, directed by
Ben Cohen and accompanied by
Rochelle Barr, presents musical
programs which focus on the
works of prominent Jewish com-
posers sung in Hebrew, Yiddish,
Ladino and English.
The officers are: president -
Larry Katkowsky; vice president
- Mine Packman; secretary - Jer-
ry Begel; and treasurer - Henry
Bodzin. Board members include:
Joseph Katz, Debra Luria, Russ
Medalie, Janet Pont and Deena
Pearlman Weisberg.
Open auditions will be held on
