The Atlanta Games marked the
fourth Olympics for Mr. Stacey.
He also worked Calgary and Seoul
in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992.
As a cameraman, Mr. Stacey
needs to have an understanding
of the sport he works.
At the equestrian venue, Mr.
Stacey learned by doing. Or, as he
described it, he learned via os-
mosis.
"Go ahead, ask me anything
about equestrian," he said.
With other sports, particular-
ly football, it helps to be able to un-
derstand and anticipate what the
team or an individual player might
do.

Of course, there have been
times where Mr. Stacey makes
mistakes. His "ugliest" moment
came while working a hand-held
camera at a football game. He
somehow managed to cross his
camera's cable over the net raised
behind the goalpost when a field
goal was kicked. When the net
went up, so did his camera. For-
tunately, he had enough cable to
keep from losing the valuable
equipment.
Mr. Stacey, a 1979 graduate of
the University of Michigan, began
his career with the weekend news
at WUOM, the National Public
Radio affiliate in Ann Arbor. From
there he worked a camera for a ca-
ble company and picked up vari-
ous jobs when he could, including
work for the ESPN sports net-
work.
His resume also includes a stint
as cameraman for a preacher's
program on Channel 62. Six
months after he got the job, Mr.
Stacey was fired because the
preacher had a "talk with God."
His network break came when
a cameraman didn't show up for
a Pistons game. A friend called Mr.
Stacey to see if he could fill in. He's
been "filling in" ever since. ❑
