NET equipment for individual
laboratories runs about $15,000.
A western Michigan hospital
that declined to be named has
used PAPNET since its clinical
trials began two years ago — rou-
tinely. All Pap smears are sent
to the laboratory for rescreening,
according to the head cytotech-
nologist there.
So far, the hospital has
screened 10,000 smears, she said.
"The lab and the hospital are
very progressive. Their mission,
basically, is operations excel-
lence. They went to provide cost-
effective health care, and if we
catch a cancer sooner, that
woman is positively affected," she
said.

However, using PAPNET is
more time-consuming than man-
ually screening a Pap smear and
requires five days of training for
lab techs, she added.
Mr. Rutenberg believes most
insurance companies don't yet
cover the cost of a PAPNET
screen, which ranges between
$35 and $40.
PAPNET received FDA ap-
proval last November after a se-
ries of clinical trials. It has been
in use in Europe, Israel and Aus-
tralia for two years.
"We hope to be able to an-
nounce that we will have pro-
tected 1 million women. We're
not there yet," Mr. Rutenberg
said.
