that level. If they stick togeth-

they'll be much tougher."
Table tennis coach Roger
Black has several veterans go-
ing to New Jersey, including his
son Andy, who won gold medals
in singles and doubles last year.
Other returnees are Marc
Weiss, a bronze medalist last
year, and Mike Rott, a silver
medalist.
In golf, coach Matt Lester has
his largest team ever with 11
players, including 5-handicap-
per Brad Schwartz and Jeff
Nash, who carries a 9 handicap.
Derek Sanders is returning for
his third year and will serve as
golf-team captain.
Coach Linda Okun's tennis
team may have to deal with a
Davis Cup format — eight-
game pro sets instead of the tra-
ditional two-out-of-three sets.
But the team will be led by
ranked junior players Brad
Jaffe, Aaron Rubin and Ashley
Abramson and high-school play-
ers Mark Tapper, Brian Lubet-

and expects medals in individ-

"The mixed-age relays are as
strong as we've ever taken," he
says.
The girls softball team lost
seven veterans from last year
who were too old for this year's
Maccabi. Coach Don Rudick
says the team is young but has
a number of athletes who play
junior varsity or varsity for their
high schools.
Coach Dave Levine expects
"much better things" from his
baseball team, with more 14-
year-olds, strong pitching and
excellent catching from Ben
Mutnick.
The track team is smaller
than in previous years, with 15
athletes, and coach Joel Kash-
dan expects his leaders to be
Sean Teeple, Jenny Adelson
and Elyse Simon. Kashdan be-
lieves Detroit will have six or
seven athletes who will compete
for medals, "but we don't have
the depth we usually have."
The volleyball team has lost
several players and coach Ken
Bertin sees 1996 as a rebuild-
ing year for his usually strong
boys and girls squads. ❑
