Medication
Gets Backing
A Food and Drug Administration
panel recommended approval of
the abortion medication Mifepri-
stone (RU-486), a decision that
pleased a leading Jewish
women's group.
The National Council of Jew-
ish Women testified at a hush-
hush hearing,.which was held in
a suburban Washington ware-
house to prevent disruption by
anti-abortion protesters.
"NCJW strongly supports the
enhancement of reproductive
health options for all women,"
Donna Gary, a national vice pres-
ident of the group, told the FDA
committee. "As evidenced by the
nearly 200,000 women in Europe
who have chosen to use Mifepri-
stone, women trust this proce-
dure, and many want to use this
method as an alternative to abor-
tion when terminating a preg-
nancy."
Despite that popularity, the
European company that pro-
duces the drug has avoided the
American market because of vo-
ciferous protests; now, rights to
the drug have been given to the
Population Council, a non-profit
group that hopes to make the
drug widely available.
The NCJW was the only Jew-
ish group to testify at the RU-486
hearing. FDA officials could
make a decision on the drug as
early as September, although
many observers expect it tebe
put off until after the Novemtper
