Ronna Romney: Her second U.S.
Senate race.

35 hours. In two-parent families,
one parent would have to work at
least 40 hours a week.
Crime
Ms. Romney favors truth-in-
sentencing for violent criminals,
requiring them to serve a mini-
mum of 85 percent of their sen-
tences. She supports the use of
the death penalty in some cases.
The federal government, she
maintains, should provide block
grants for additional police officers
or updating technology.
Education
She vows to strengthen local
control over K-12 education. She
believes the federal government
should help low-income students
attend college. Reforming public
schools, she maintains, should be
done at the local level.
Abortion
She opposes abortion unless the
life of the mother is in danger.
Israel
She supports U.S. aid to Israel
at its current level of funding. She
sees the role of this country as one
of mediator, moving the peace
process forward. She would not
address the issue of moving the
U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. ❑

Jim Nicholson
On The Issues

Jim Nicholson graduated from
Stanford University with a degree
in economics in 1965. Two years
later, he earned his master's de-
gree in business administration
from the University of Chicago.
He went on to obtain a master of
science degree in economics from
the London School of Economics.
Mr. Nicholson ultimately got in-
volved with his family's chemical
business, PVS Inca After eight
years, he became its president and
chief executive officer. He serves
on several boards, including the
Nature Conservancy, the Michi-
gan Colleges Foundation, the
Community Foundation for
Southeastern Michigan and the
Michigan Chamber of Commerce.
In 1991, Gov. Engler appoint-
ed him chair of the Michigan

Strategic Fund. He and his wife
have four sons.
Taxes
He opposes tax hikes and the
implementation of new taxes. He
proposes requiring a two-thirds
vote in Congress to raise taxes. Mr.
Nicholson wants to create IRAs
subject to taxation on deposits, not
on withdrawals, so families can
withdraw tax-free for health care,
education, retirement income and
the purchase of a first home.
He supports allowing workers
to deduct payroll taxes paid on So-
ria] Security and is a proponent of
a $500-per-child tax credit.
Welfare Reform
Mr. Nicholson supports the Re-
publican Contract with America,
particularly the provision which
places a two-year time limit on
welfare benefits. He opposes giv-
ing automatic welfare increases
to families who have additional
children while on welfare. He
maintains the best way to create
jobs is by expanding the economy
through fewer taxes.
Crime
Mr. Nicholson supports the
death penalty. He also supports
Republican efforts to stop death-
row inmates from making sever-
al appeals. A criminal, he believes,
should be allowed a second appeal
only in certain cases. He advocates
tougher laws for drug dealers and

users. His truth-in-sentencing
plan would require a federal con-
vict to serve at least 80 percent
of his or her sentence.
Education
He would support a moment of
silence in public schools, allowing
students and teachers the option
to pray.
Abortion
Mr. Nicholson says abortion
should be discouraged, but not
made illegal. He would vote
against taxpayer funding of abor-
tion and favors parental consent
laws for minors seeking abortions.
Israel
He supports continuing current
levels of aid to Israel and the Unit-
ed States doing what it canto fur-
ther the peace process. His staff
would not address the issue of
moving the U.S. embassy to
Jerusalem. 111
