That's where, the next day, we climbed aboard the Mayflower II, a meticulously exact replica of the original vessel that carried the Pilgrims to Plymouth. On board, we talked to the "passengers" who were dressed in 17th century attire and spoke in detail about the grueling jour- ney. They, too, never ventured off course into the 20th century in their conversations with tourists. Then it was just a few minutes' walk to the famous rock. It is modest in size and appearance, which is why tourists are some- times disappointed to see it. But its symbolism is powerful. And it was another reminder that American history began right here in this historic city three cen- turies ago. ❑ z m -4 .2 m c STARTERS • ALTERNATORS • FAN BELTS • FLOOR MATS • SEAT COVERS • JUMPER CABLES • BRAKE SPECIAL • WIPERS 1:1 he 'Windy City," the "Sec- ond City," the "City of Big Shoulders." It goes by many names, but Chicago has everything you have heard about it ... and more. This big town right on Lake Michigan has a colorful Jewish history. Our people started set- tling here as early as 1832, five years before the city was incor- porated. The story of this sprin- kling of the first Jews arriving from Prussia and Austria to to- day's vibrant Jewish communi- ty of over 260,000 is an impressive tale of our people liv- ing the American dream. A part of the history is that of Chicago's Maxwell Street "ghet- to" where 55,000 Russian and Polish Jews lived over 100 years ago. Yiddish was the language of choice, and there were 40 Or- thodox shuls built within walk- ing distance of the heart of the area. Today, there are more than 110 synagogues in Chicago, sev- en Jewish community centers and every kind of service you can think of under the umbrella of the Jewish United Fund. Most of the Jewish population, about two-thirds, live in the northern suburbs of Evanston, Highland Park, Skokie, Glenview and Deerfield. A sprinkling of Jews live in the South Side in Hyde Park near the University of Chicago. The university was founded as a Baptist school more than a cen- tury ago, but has benefitted from the financial support of Julius Rosenwald, the original owner of Sears, Roebuck & Co. Jews who have won the Nobel Prize during their tenure at the university in- clude Saul Bellow and Milton Friedman. Moving north to the "Loop" (Chicago's downtown), check out the Adler Planetarium, endowed by Max Adler, Julius Rosen- wald's brother-in-law; the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Muse- um of Natural History. The Spertus Museum of Ju- daica, 618 S. Michigan Ave., is in the heart of the Loop. The mu- seum features a permanent col- lection of antique Judaica, a Holocaust exhibit, a gallery of contemporary art, special shows and programs for children. The Hyatt Regency Chicago, owned by the Pritzker family, has some of the best kosher food in the city, plus views of Lake Michigan, the Chicago River and the city's skyline. The art museum that tops them all in town is the interna- tionally known Art Institute on Michigan. Be sure to see the Cha- gall stained-glass windows and check out the current temporary exhibitions. Basketball fans will want to see a Bulls game, or at least the action sculpture of Michael Jor- dan. Baseball fans can see the Cubs at Wrigley Field or the White Sox at Comiskey Park. Stroll Michigan Ave. for some window shopping, stop for a snack and visit the Harold Wash- ington Library. Walk or drive along the lake front for a relaxing experience or take a boat out and sail. ❑ - <
