her garden. She was dressed in
a bonnet, ankle-length dress and
white apron; and her tools were
by her side — a matlock to loosen
soil, a shovel and a hoe. As she
worked in her vegetable garden,
she told us about her daily life,
describing how she is up each
) morning by "the third cock's
crow" and then works all day un-
til it's time for dinner; and then,
soon after, it's time to retire.
Next door, Goodman Tracy
was seated inside his humble liv-
ing room. After he talked about
his life as a husbandman, we
asked him if he knew any Jews
in Plymouth.
"Jews — they don't believe in
Christ, do they?" he asked. No,
he had never met any, either here
or in England. But he'd also lived
in Leyden, Holland for a number
of years, and he knew of Jews in
Amsterdam.
"In Amsterdam, we knew
there was a synagogue," he said.
"But I never went in. Oh, no!" he
emphasized. "It's against the law
for anyone to be anything but
Church of England.
"Holland had what they call
`religious freedom,"' he said,
sounding almost scornful. "But
it's a kind of corruption to me. We
choose the word of Jesus Christ."
Of course, these are the views
of Goodman Tracy — not of
Richard Cone, the interpreter. In
fact, he is Jewish. But his re-
sponse accurately reflected his
character's ideas.
In this and other conversa-
tions, we found the interpreters
to be consistent and knowledge-
able aboutl7th century religious
attitudes, and this added an in-
teresting dimension to our visit.
For instance, seated under a
tree near the house he shares
with six other Pilgrims was
Robert Bartlett. He, too, told us
all about his daily life. Then we
changed the subject and asked
him whether he had ever met a
Jew.
He shook his head. 'There are
none here," he said. "And they
wouldn't be very welcome."
Actually, Alex Pevzner is also
Jewish. But he, too, played his
role conscientiously. (I had
learned in advance that Cone and
Pevzner were Jewish, which is
why we especially sought them
out.)
After hours, Alex Pevzner was
able to shed his role as a Pilgrim
and talk about his own life. (But
he would not think of doing this
until the visitors had gone.)
A resident of nearby Duxbury,
Mr. Pevzner and his family are
members of Beth David congre-
gation in Plymouth, where Alex
was bar mitzvah.
The 21-year-old music student
recently spent five months living
and working on a kibbutz. So
when he meets Israeli tourists,
he must resist the temptation to
talk to them in Hebrew. Besides
