mational interviews with a com-
pany, even if a position isn't yet
available.
Mr. Silverton, who has one
daughter in college and one
about to start, initially partici-
pated in the Corporate Oppor-
tunity Program's seminars and
ongoing networking sessions for
four months. They were key to
moving on, he says.
"It provides a forum; it pro-
vides a vehicle; it provides a
place. That's key and critical -
a place to go, a place to network,
a place to cry, a place to laugh,
a place to be serious, a place to
learn," he says.
"The idea that you can go
someplace where you're not go-
ing to be judged is so critical for
somebody going through unem-
ployment, especially when you
look at yourself in the mirror
and say, 'Why me? What have
I done wrong?' and you come
away from a session with Walt
and the group and feel you're
OK, it's not you, these are cir-
cumstances that will pass. You
go because of the constant rein-
forcement. And it matters. It
matters tremendously," Mr. Sil-
verton continues.
In a series of ongoing "inter-
vention/job search" workshops
developed by the University of
Michigan Institute for Social Re-
search, researchers have found
that a sense of isolation is as pro-
found as it is common among the
recently unemployed. Being
among others in a similar
predicament "gives them
tremendous relief and a sense of
social support," says Amiram Vi-
nokur, Ph.D., a social psycholo-
gist who is involved in the study.
The workshops, which pri-
marily served nonprofessionals,
also helped reduce symptoms of
depression for at least the two
years that researchers tracked
participants and helped improve
their "social functioning," Dr. Vi-
nokur reports. Happily, they also
tended to find more permanent
and higher paying jobs, he says.
Mr. Levinson is among the
former unemployed who found
both. Not long after he left the
software company, he hooked up
with Gerry Weinberg, who runs
a business that helps companies
and business owners improve
their communication and sales
skills based on the David H.
Sandler method. A year ago, he
started his own Sandler Sales
Institute franchise in Southfield,
RHL Associates.
If not for JVS, Mr. Levinson
says, he would be working for
somebody else as a manager
somewhere, drawing a regular
paycheck.
"I work for a terrible boss.
He's harder than hell," Mr.
Levinson laughs. And, he's mak-
ing significantly more money.
Mr. Silverton swore he
wouldn't go back into office sup-
plies, but he's at it again, serv-
ing as Midwest account manager
for Corporate Express, which
supplies major corporations like
Kellogg, Nabisco and Blue Cross
Blue Shield.
"Going through the Corporate
Opportunity Program, listening
to Walt, networking with the
other people going through the
program, really clearly defining
my strengths, my weaknesses,
my goals and my desires pretty
much indicated I better stay in
sales," he says.
If Corporate Express estab-
lishes a distribution center in
Michigan, Mr. Silverton figures
he would serve as sole - repre-
sentative.
"I love every minute of it. I eat
up the challenge," he says.
