who would do anything half-
heartedly. But at the time, I was
ill-prepared for what I would
quickly learn was Dr. Crosby's ex-
tensive knowledge of Judaism.
He constantly challenged me,
challenged the entire class. You
couldn't trip him up, throw in
something like, "Well, the Ram-
barn says ..." and think he would
shy away. He already knew all
about the Rambam, and could tell
you a thing or two about what he
had to say. Most Jews have no
concept of what keeping kosher
really entails. But Dr. Crosby
knew every detail.
I was intrigued by how much
Dr. Crosby knew about Judaism,
but even more important was
why. He certainly had no interest
in converting; he was a devoted
Christian. He had no plans of be-
coming a missionary, so he wasn't
learned for deceptive reasons. He
didn't even have Jewish ancestors
or a Jewish wife.
I never got around to asking
this question to him during class,
and afterward I never had a
chance. Soon after my sophomore
year, we learned Dr. Crosby had
been diagnosed with cancer, and
that he had a matter of months to
live.
It was painful to visit him in the
hospital, but many of -us went any-
way, regularly, because we loved
him. His entire head and neck
were encased in some kind of a
metal helmet, allowing him vir-
tually no movement. He could do
little more than lie there, and he
spoke quietly, hesitantly, though
he was happy to talk philosophy
and religion still, and he kept his
sense of humor.
I thought often about Dr. Cros-
by after his death, now more than
15 years ago, always returning to
his knowledge of Judaism. It took
awhile, but I think I finally un-
derstand it.

Dr. Crosby was, above all, a
man of intellect, and that is what,
Pm convinced, ignited his passion
in Judaism. In class, he tried to
explain to us again and again how
intricate, how beautifully profound
Judaism is. Most of the students
(we were almost all Jewish) boiled
Judaism down to eating matzah
on Pesach and going to synagogue
services and Hebrew school and
fasting on Yom Kippur — and
complaining about it the entire
time.
But Dr. Crosby saw something
completely different: a remark-
able system of laws, a long histo-
ry of defining and redefining and
perfecting the tiniest detail (If you
find a book on the street and you
don't know to whom it belongs,
what do you do? Exactly to whom
and when should you donate
charity, and how much should be
given? Under what circum-
stances can you drive on Shab-
bat?), and an incomparable
guideline for living which he
trusted, respected and admired.
And because of that, he planted
the seed that would, one day, help
us see the greatness of Judaism
ourselves.
I don't know that I would
have gone on to major in child
development had it not been for
Ms. X. Frankly, my dear, I don't
give a damn where she is today
or what she thinks about any-
thing, especially me, though I
have to say I feel more than a lit-
tle vindicated when I read child-
care experts now talk about the
value of teacher-student interac-
tion.
What I do know is that my ap-
preciation of Judaism — and
specifically the intellectual nature
which is at its core — would not
for me be what it is today had I
never met Dr. Crosby. What a
privilege it was to have known
him. ❑
