ar collector extraordinaire Lar-
ry Moss has one piece of advice
for those passionate about classic
automobiles.
"If you're a car nut, and if you could go
to one car event all year, this is the one," he
says about Meadow Brook's Concours d'El-
egance, happening this weekend in
Rochester.
Now in its 17th year, the annual display
of vintage cars will feature nearly 300 cars
representing every decade from the 1890s
through the 1960s. Meadow Brook's Con-
cours d'Elegance was recently ranked as
one of the top three classic auto shows in
the world, behind the ones in Pebble Beach,
Calif., and 13agatelle, Paris.
This year, Moss was in charge of choos-
ing all the sports cars that will be viewed
on the grounds of Meadow Brook Hall.
Among the 50 cars he selected are Ferraris,
Porsches, Mercedes Benz and Oscas. The
process of selecting the cars, says Moss, was
not easy. While some car collectors called
him to participate, he more often tracked
down classic car owners throughout the
country and stayed in touch with them all year long. By
keeping in close contact, Moss was able to persuade most
of them to travel to Meadow Brook Hall and showcase
their cars.
Moss, who owns a 1967 Jaguar, a 1970 Morgan and a
1946 Packard, represents the "young blood" of the Mead-
ow Brook Concours. "Initially, car shows were for people
who knew about cars from the '20s, '30s, and '40s," says
Moss, who is also president of the Michigan chapter of the
Morgan Club. 'Now shows have evolved to include cars
from later years."
The Concours d'Elegance is the climactic event of a
weekend of automobile festivities at Meadow Brook. These
highlights include a cruise of vintage cars and an ice cream
social, an invitational art show, fashion shows and his-
toric races. These activities were created to honor the at-
tending delegates from 35 national car clubi and are open
to the public.
