Congregation B'nai Moshe will
offer "Gateways," a series of pre-
High Holiday adult Jewish study
events starting Aug. 15 and run-
ning through Sept 7.
Most of the sessions are on a
basic introductory level. All ex-
plore themes of the season. The
entire series is free and open to
the community.
Except where otherwise not-
ed, all "Gateways" events will
take place at B'nai Moshe.
On Thursday night, Aug. 15,
at 7:30 p.m. there will be a two-
part opening session featuring
Rabbi Elliot Pachter and adult
educator Aviva Silverman. Rab-
bi Pachter will present an intro-
duction and overview titled "Elul:

Sept. 4th 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Sept. 5th 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.

A Structured Gateway to the
Days of Awe." Ms. Silverman will
lead a text study at 8:30 p.m. on
"The Akedah (Binding of Isaac)
Through the Ages."
On Monday night, Aug. 19, at
8 p.m., Rabbi Pachter will lead a
discussion for parents of school-
age children at a private home.
The topic will be "Talking About
Teshuvah With Our Children
and Other High Holiday Chal-
lenges."
On three consecutive 'Tuesday
mornings starting Aug. 20, 10:30-
11:30 am., Lynn Scheele Nevins
will teach a three-part series
called "Getting a Grip on the
Machzor." Phonetic Hebrew
reading ability would be helpful
but is not required for this class.
On Thursday, Aug. 22, Rabbi
Marla Feldman, deputy director
of the Jewish Community Coun-
cil for Domestic Concerns, will
lead a lunch-time study session
titled ."Kol Shofar: Communal
Teshuvah and the Call to Social
Justice." Lunch at noon; session
from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Participants
are invited to bring their own
brown bag lunch (dairy, parve or
veggie).
On Sunday morning, Aug. 25,
from 9:30-noon, B'nai Moshe
educator Rita Abramson will lead
a "Standing on One Foot" He-

brew marathon for total begin-
ners, focusing on letter recogni-
tion for key words in the High
Holiday prayers.
Music of the High Holidays
will be the focus on Tuesday
night, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. with
a session led by Cantor Louis
Klein, followed by a singing
tutorial at 8:30 p.m. with lay
leaders of B'nai Moshe. Translit-
erated song sheets will be pro-
vided.
On Wednesday night, Aug. 28,
from 7:30-9 p.m., psychotherapist
Bob Hack will facilitate an open
discussion about how to cope:
"When the High Holidays Come
at a Time of Personal Crisis."
Another opportunity to build
up one's Hebrew vocabulary for
the High Holidays will be offered
on Thursday night, Aug. 29, from
7:30-9 p.m. in a workshop with
Ahuva Newman.
"Gateways" will also include a
two-part Shabb at morning
Learning Minyan with author
and teacher Len Wanetik on
Aug. 31 and Sept. 7, from 10:30-
11:30 a.m. His subject will be
`The Special Torah and Haftarah
Readings for Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur."
On Wednesday night, Sept. 4,
at 8 p.m., Rabbi Pachter will lead
an interactive discussion on the
question, "What's So HIGH
about the 'High Holidays'?" Also
scheduled at the shul that night
will be a LIFE (Jewish Family
Education) Program Curriculum
Night and Ice Cream Social, plus
an open house for prospective
new members.
"Gateways" will conclude with
a special Selichot program on
Saturday night, Sept. 7, at 8:30
p.m. The evening will include a
dessert reception in honor of
those members who joined B'nai
Moshe during the year 5756
(1995-96), a special video pre-"---)
sentation and discussion led by '
Rabbi Pachter, and a brief, late-
night Selichot service.
