SUMMER TIME
Farmer's Market, and Falmouth
Heights with its summer homes
overlooking Vineyard Sound.
And for history buffs, there's
the old mansion just off the Vil-
lage Green, where visitors can
see varied exhibits about the
town's history mounted by the
Falmouth Historical Society.
Falmouth has still another at-
traction. It's one of the few towns
on Cape Cod with a full-fledged
Jewish community, the Fal-
mouth Jewish Congregation.
For Jewish visitors, this means
the chance to attend Shabbat ser-
vices in a Cape Cod setting and
also to see how a core of year-
round residents maintain an ac-
tive Jewish community.
"Visitors often seem aston-
ished that there's a community
this large on the Cape; and
they're very surprised to hear
that we're busy in the winter,
too," says Rabbi Elias Lieberman.
He presides over a Reform con-
gregation of nearly 250 mem-
bership units plus 60 associate
households; these are members
with weekend or summer
homes.
Shabbat services are held year
round; but because this is Cape
Cod, attendance at services dou-
bles during the tourist season.
"We get first-time visitors who
come out of curiosity, and re-
turning vacationers who have en-
joyed our services on previous
visits," says Rabbi Lieberman.
Services from Memorial Day
through October — the peak
tourist season — are held in the
250-seat sanctuary located in
East Falmouth in a former Con-
gregationalist meeting house.
"It reminds people of Touro
Synagogue in Newport," says
Rabbi Lieberman, leading the
way into the distinctive sanctu-
ary with wooden pews, wide
plank floors, high ceiling and 12
by 12-foot windows.
"People respond to its beauti-
ful simplicity," says the rabbi,
noting also that next year mem-
bers will celebrate the 200th an-
niversary of this meeting house
together with the entire Fal-
mouth community.
They are also attached to the
six-year-old Jewish Communi-
ty Center located just across the
road from the sanctuary.
Built in Cape Cod clapboard
style, the Center is a modern
complex complete with a chapel,
classroom wing, rabbi's study, of-
fices, plus library, kitchen and so-
cial hall.
And situated in a serene glen
facing the community center is
the newly dedicated Falmouth
Jewish Cemetery, the Cape's
only all-Jewish cemetery.
All year long, the community
center hums with activity. It's the
site for twice-weekly religious
school classes for more than 85
youngsters, a full adult-educa-
tion program, varied sisterhood
programs and more. ❑
