From the deck, the skyline of Manhattan was strik- ing, with the World Trade Cen- ter towers piercing the sky like giant silver rectangles. The boat glided on, and soon there was another memorable sight — the Statue of Liberty in the distance. As we approached, cameras were poised. Some passengers stood on deck and simply gazed reverently at the 151-foot-high statue. Rising from the water, Lady Liberty looked majestic in- deed. In fact, many of the sights we saw during_ a three-hour cruise around Manhattan were mem- orable when viewed from the water. The tour was first on my agenda during a recent weekend recreation area: Battery Park on the tip of Lower Manhattan. Along the waterfront prome- nade, tourists were looking through the telscopes positioned all along the water. Vendors were busy selling water ice and "I Love New York" T-shirts. And the lines were long for the pop- ular Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry. Near the middle of the park was a striking sculpture that honors those who came by boat the hard way to Ellis Island. The stone sculpture depicts a group of immigrants, looking exhaust- ed as they clutch their luggage. They are clearly Jewish immi- grants because one male figure wears a yarmulke. Right across the street from Battery Park, at the corner of State Street and Whitehall, I stopped to look at a flagpole commemorating the arrival of 23 Sephardic Jews who came PHOTO BY RUTH ROVNER A -- *F R 4-4)-1-71' Enjoy Manhattan On A Weekend in New York which I spent The Manhattan by boat from Brazil, almost entirely on or near skyline from the fleeing persecution af- water. the water.
