Names High-School Athletes

year to be honored at its Nov. 4
Hall of Fame induction banquet.

The athletes of the year are
Niki Berlin, of Huntington
Woods and Berkley High School,
and Storm Kirschenbaum, of
Franklin and Birmingham
Groves High School.
The scholar-athletes are Ben-
jamin Gitler, of Oak Park and
Berkley High School, and
Matthew Toth, of Bloomfield
Hills and Cranbrook-Kingswood
Schools. All four students grad-
uated in June.
Berlin was named Berkley's
most valuable player in both
basketball and volleyball this
year, and she also played soft-
ball, where she was All-District,
All-Region and All-Area. In vol-
leyball, she had a 96.3 serving
percentage and 97.5 setting per-
centage for the season and was
named to the All-State academ-
ic team.
She graduated with a 3.8
grade-point average and will at-
tend the University of Wiscon-
sin at Madison.
Kirschenbaum earned All-
State, All-County, All-Metro and
All-Area awards on Groves'
baseball team. The Michigan
High School Baseball Coaches
Association named him to its
dream team.
The senior centerfielder set
school records in 1996 for home
runs (10) and runs batted in (54),
and his .518 batting average was
second highest in Groves' histo-
ry. After the first 10 games of the
season, he was batting over .700.

He will attend the University
of Florida on a baseball scholar-
ship.
As MJSHOF athletes of the
year, Berlin and Kirschenbaum
will have their names inscribed
at the MJSHOF wall at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Commu-
nity Center and will receive a
plaque at the Nov. 4 banquet at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
The scholar-athletes, Gitler
and Toth, will be honored at the
banquet with $500 scholarships.
Gitler was co-captain of
Berkley's football team and cap-
tain of the wrestling team his se-
nior year, earning All-League
and All-State recognition in both
sports. He had a 3.24 grade-
point average, played in
Berkley's symphony band and
was a member of Quill and
Scroll. He will attend Albion Col-
lege.
Toth graduated Cranbrook-
Kingswood with a 4.0 average
and will attend Williams College.

He earned seven letters in high
school in baseball, football, track
and wrestling, and he was cap-
tain and most valuable player in
wrestling. He also played in the
school symphony and was editor
in chief of the school newspaper.

nominated by high-school ath-
letic directors. The scholar-ath-
letes were nominated by their
high school counselors and
coaches.

Games In August

The 10th annual Hall of Fame
Games for youth and adult ath-
letes with disabilities has been
scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 25,
in the Rosenberg Complex at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Commu-
nity Center.
The games will begin at 10
a.m. with an opening ceremony.
Events during the day include
25-, 50-, 100-yard individiinl and
wheelchair races and a 400-yard
wheelchair relay;25- and 50-
yard backstroke and freestyle
swimming races; standing and
running long jump; frisbee dis-
tance throw; soccer goal kick;
tennis-ball throw; and other
events.
There will also be a luncheon,
recreational gym and swim ac
tivities, and 7 p.m. closing cer-
emonies followed by dinner.
Former NBA basketball play-
er John Long will give a demon-
stration during the day.
Sportscaster Jim Berk will be
master of ceremonies at the
opening, which will feature
speeches by Rabbi Paul Yedwab
of Temple Israel and Michigan
