Woods residents, they changed
the name to the Oak-Woods Jew-
ish Center.
Initially, the shul organizers
eyed the southwest corner of Sco-
tia and Dartmouth for their syn-
agogue. They changed their mind,
feeling the heart of the Orthodox
community would be the current
Allan and Coolidge location.
In 1954, the congregation af-
filiated with the Young Israel
movement, changing the name
of the shul to the Young Israel
Center of Oak-Woods. It opened
in 1954, then expanded in 1967.
"I guess I'm feeling sad," said
Mrs. Dombey, who remains a
board member ofYoung Israel of
Oak Park. "But Pm proud of what
Oak Woods was, and I'm proud
of the fact that Oak Woods had
the longest life of any synagogue
(43 years) in the same building
in Detroit. I feel good about the
merger. It perpetuates Oak
Woods as an entity. Our memo-
rial plaques will be moved to the
Young Israel of Oak Park. Our
Torahs will be moved and our
books will be moved. It means
that Oak Woods still exists. And
what's also important is that we
are still in Oak Park. We didn't
leave the community."
For Mr. Applebaum and Mrs.
Dombey, the sale of Oak Woods,

"People predicted the doom of
Oak Park as a Jewish neighbor-
hood in the '60s and the '70s," Mr.
Applebaum said. "Jews were
moving to West Bloomfield.
There was a new JCC there. But
then many people discovered that
they couldn't afford to go. They
asked themselves, 'What do I
have to fear here in Oak Park?
The quality of life is good!' "
Mr. Applebaum added that
Oak Park Jewry benefited from
the establishment of the Kollel
on Lincoln and a national resur-
gence in Orthodoxy. This, too, is
reflected in what is now a high-
demand housing market in the
Lincoln and Greenfield area.
Houses there are often snatched
up through word of mouth.
There is still some demand by
Jews for housing in the south
Oak Park area, west of Church,
according to Marion Freedman,
director of the Neighborhood
Project. "Oak Park is very
strong," said Ms. Freedman. "I
feel that, if anything, the merg-
er of Oak Woods with Greenfield
is going to strengthen the com-
munity. People in the Oak
Woods sector will move a little
to the west, but not necessarily
to the north. So, it's strengthen-
ing the south as well. South Oak
Park is growing in strength, but
