s the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is wortha pound
of cure. That goes for heat related illnesses and injuries
as well.

The following suggestions come from a variety of sources in-
cluding Sports Medicine Digest, The Physicictn and Sports Med-
icine, Sports Science Exchange, American Athletics and Women's
Sports and Fitness.
*Drink lots of fluids a day or two before planning to exer-
cise. Then drink more water during and after exercise.
*Wear loose-fitting, light-colored and light-weight clothing.
*Limit activities during very hot and humid weather.
*Avoid alcohol before, during and after exercising in the heat.
Alcohol causes the loss of additional fluids.
*Exercise in the morning or evening when the weather is

'

coolest.
*Wear a hat and sunscreen to protect skin.
