and the Fulton Fish Market, all
sorts of ethnic specialties are
available — falafel, kosher
franks, knishes, bagels and more
— and there's abundant fresh
fish, too.
After enjoying lunch outdoors
while watching the impromptu
street entertainment — musi-
cians and then magicians — I
boarded the Seaport Liberty
Cruise for a one hour tour with
guided commentary.
On this tour, we covered the
southern tip of Manhattan, from
the East River to Battery Park
City on the Hudson River. And
the cruise commentary includ-
ed the city's fascinating mar-
itime history.
Back at the dock, I explored
the South Street Seaport Muse-
um District. The entire area is a
vast maritime "museum," in-
cluding exhibits of ship models,
ocean liner memorabilia, mar-
itime oils scrimshaw designs and
more.
Historic ships are also docked
here, including the Peking, a
347 foot four-masted barque
built in 1911 and the Pioneer, an
1885 iron cargo schooner that of-
fers daily sails and charters. But
besides all the sightseeing ac-
tivities, the seaport also offers
the chance to relax on the wa-
terfront, especially since Pier 17
has an upper deck complete with
deck chairs and a close-up view
of Brooklyn Bridge.
That's where I ended my
weekend. At dusk, I sat on a
deck chair on the pier, savoring
the sight of Brooklyn Bridge
with its intricate suspension ca-
bles and graceful sweep.
The famous bridge was yet
another reminder of the city's
Jewish history. First, the immi-
grants came across the Atlantic
and lived in crowded tene-
mants on the Lower East Side.
Then, as they prospered, they
crossed the East River to live in
more spacious quarters in
Brooklyn.
This reminder of Jewish jour-
neys over water was one inter-
esting theme during my
weekend on the waterfront.
It was a weekend that in-
cluded varied activity. But even
with three boat rides and visits
to Battery Park and the South
Street Seaport, I hardly covered
all the ways to enjoy New York
by water.
The Staten Island Ferry, the
riverfront views from the Unit-
ed Nations, and if I wanted to
splurge, a yacht cruise on the
water — these and other plea-
sures would have to wait for an-
other visit.
And I would, indeed, look for-
ward to a return visit to the wa-
terfront. It's a refreshing way to
by-pass the bustle of midtown
Manhattan and to enjoy the riv-
er ambiance of Manhattan Is-
land. ❑
