Psst, Do You Have
Two Minutes?

Save Mon, On
Prescription rugs!

BY JACK WILLIAMS

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
As a seasoned gym owner, Steve
Elbogen preaches patience to his
hard-body-hungry clientele,
many of whom have yet to learn
that the road to fitness is paved
with speed bumps.
"We're in an instant-gratifi-
cation-oriented society," he says.
"Things are getting faster and
faster all the time. But one thing
we're never gonna speed up is
results in fitness.
"You've gotta give yourself six
to eight weeks to look and feel
different."
OK. So why has this 39-year-
old entrepreneur opted to write
what would seem to be a quick-
fix, 47-page minibook titled The
Two Minute Workout?
Strictly satire, right? A spoof
on the exercise industry's se-
duction of chronic sloths?
Guess again.
"The greatest obstacle to ex-
ercise and fitness is time," El-
bogen says. "I'm tired of hearing
`I have no time' as an excuse not
to exercise."
So if you're rushed, over-
booked, unable to get to the gym,
you've still got a couple of min-
utes, right? Enough for push-
ups, pull-ups, abdominal
crunches, squats or various oth-
er movements that briefly but
intensely tax major muscle
groups.
Acknowledging that aerobic
exercise must be a minimum of
20 minutes to significantly
strengthen the heart and car-
diovascular system, Elbogen de-
cided to target strength and
flexibility, in that order.
The concept: Push yourself to
fatigue in a couple of minutes
and you may, indeed, see results
over time.
After all, it only hurts for a lit-
tle while.
If the One-Minute Manager,
Ken Blanchard's best seller, can
reach an audience with a short
attention span, perhaps Elbo-
gen can motivate those prone to
abandon exercise at a moment's
notice.
Owner of the Fitness Network
in San Diego, where his clien-
tele is largely 30-to 50-years old,
Elbogen repeatedly has heard
the plea, "I need to drop 20
pounds in three weeks."
Possible?
Yes.
Realistic?
No.
Says Elbogen: "They want to
start today and feel better to-
morrow.
"They have unrealistic ex-
pectations, which is why a lot of
people quit.
