when I woke up at 6 a.m. and
most of the tents were still stand-
ing. It was wet and chilly when
we left. I like riding in this kind
of weather, but it didn't stay that
way for long. Within 25 minutes
I had shed my layers and was ap-
plying suntan lotion. A buin
would be a major misery on this
trip.
Today we rode through Cali-
fornia's wine country. The rolling
hills and miles of grape trees
made for some beautiful Kodak
moments. Today was my favorite
day. We were the only ones on
the road. I felt a million miles
from LA We took our time get-
ting into camp. There was no
point in rushing and not being
able to take in the sights.
They finally had Snickers bars
in the lunch bags. This is the only
time I ever eat candy bars. I love
being able to eat whatever I want
and know that I'll be right back
on my bike pedaling it off.

Day 6 — 90 Miles

Today was a long day that took
us through Santa Barbara and
into Ventura. I recognized land-
marks in each city. There were
signs hanging everywhere en-
couraging us. The waving and
clapping children we passed
made me rather emotional. I
stopped in the media tent on the
way back and got to see all the
footage Fox news had been doing
every night.

Day 7 — 70 Miles

I woke up knowing that this

would be my last morning wak-
ing up in a chilly tent. I was sure
in a week I'd miss my sleeping
bag, but at that moment all I
could thing of was a real toilet
and my comfortable bed. We had
to make it to West Hollywood by
2 p.m. or they would pick us up
on the route to make the ending
ceremony. I made it to the first
pit stop (18 miles) in just over an
hour. There was so much adren-
aline. We all were really pumped
to get to the finish line.
Along the way, I had the
biggest surprise. My roommates
and my brother were there and
so was my dad, who came in from
West Bloomfield. We chatted for
a while, and it was the best feel-
ing to have my friends and fam-
ily there supporting me. Then I
had to go so I could make it by 2
p.m.
I caught up to my friends and
we all looked out for each other
because the Pacific Coast High-
way can be dangerous. As we
rode to the ceremony there were
literally thousands of people lin-
ing the streets. I heard there
were 15,000 people there. I was
fortunate enough to see most of
the people I had met and was
able to say goodbye. I couldn't
wait to get home and take a
shower.
