FRANCHI MENOTTI

Milan

In Israel, conflict between
different groups of Jews is on
the increase. But in this coun-
try, Reform and Conservative
Jews are coming together for a
more active social action agen-
da.
That was the theme of a
conference this week in Wash-
ington that brought together
65 activists representing the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, the central Re-
form group, and the United
Synagogue of Conservative Ju-
daism, whose name speaks for
itself.

THE FACE THAT LAUNCHED A 1000 SHIPS.

Inspired by his original collection for the Italian Navy, Franchi Menotti's marine
sports watch is the most popular face in Italy since the Mona Lisa. The Franchi
Menotti's marine sports collection combines Swiss efficiency with the best of
Italian design and frankly, has been known to make a lot of waves.

Mark Pelavin:
Give leaders the tools.

The idea was to give congre-
gational social action leaders
the tools they need to mobilize
their membership on issues
of economic and social justice,
said Mark Pelavin, associate di-
rector of the Religious Action
Center of Reform Judaism.
"At most synagogues, there
is strong support for social ac-
tion programming," he said.
"The real challenge is getting
people mobilized. How do you
make social action an integral
part of every aspect of syna-
gogue life? That's the issue be-
ing addressed at this
conference."
Sarrae Crane, director of so-
cial. action and public policy for
the USCJ, agreed.
"Over the past two years
we've seen a tremendous
increase in interest in our
congregations," she said. 'We re-
ally saw that when the
black churches started to
burn; our phones were ring-
ing nonstop because people
wanted to help respond to this
problem."
She said that the two move-
ments agree on enough social
issues to forge an ongoing
partnership — although they
disagree on homosexuality.
