Israel at UNIQUE AMONG apming MICHIGAN'S LARGEST AND MOST Underwater Lawyer? SPECTACULAR RESTAURANTS There's life under the sea — as well as litigation. & BANQUET CENTERS NECHEMIA MEYERS SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS Amit Feiglin, a strikingly hand- some Tel Aviv law student, may well become Israel's first "un- derwater lawyer," specializing in law suits that arise from diving ( accidents. Though hardly com- mon, there are enough of them in the United States to keep sever- al law firms in business, and now that Israel has 60,000 certified divers — plus many thousands of tourists who go there to dive — there could be room for such a firm in that country as well. If so, Mr. Feiglin would be the right man to set it up after he gets his law degree. For he is as knowledgeable about what goes on underwater as he is about what goes on in a courtroom. Unlike most of the other qual- ified diving instructors in that country, he is not a former naval commando. Diving only began for him after he had spent several years as an Armored Corps offi- cer, but he has long since caught up with the commandos. Over the years, Mr. Feiglin has worked as an instructor in the Red Sea area (Eilat and Sinai), in Thailand (Kohsamu Island) and Australia (the Barrier Reef). While he loves all those places, he considers the shores of the Red Sea best of all. There, he points out, you can walk straight into the water and reach a good div- ing site in a matter of minutes, whereas an hour-long boat trip is required to reach such a site / along the Barrier Reef. Moreover, underwater visibility here (about 40 meters) is much better, for ex- ample, than in Thailand (about five meters). Mr. Feiglin can teach diving equally well in English and He- brew and has done so in many places. But in Thailand, strange- ly enough, Hebrew turned out to be more important than English. This is because there are thou- sands of young Israelis wander- ing around the country and when they learned that there was a Hebrew-speaking instructor at one of the diving schools, many of them signed up for lessons. He does have a problem that other instructors don't have; he is Orthodox, which means that he won't work on Saturday — when there are customers galore. But he gets jobs anyway. Also, of course, finding kosher food in Kohsamu Island or along the Barrier Reef is no easy mat- ter. His solution: sticking to a veg- etarian diet and, when absolutely necessary, "compromising a lit- tle." ❑ The perfect lakeside setting for elegant bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions.
