.........

something invisible, the inner
self, making it a symbol."
The artist, who likes to work in
the late-night quiet, started paint-
ing as a young child and became
serious when he was 17 and at-
tending Cass Technical High
School. Inspired while reading
about the history of the Old Mas-
ters, he wanted to incorporate
their techniques in his renderings.
"I tried to bring all that knowl-
edge into my work as a founda-
tion and then go ahead and
experiment," said the fine-arts
graduate of Wayne State Uni-
versity and former student at the
Center for Creative Studies. "My
primary goal is to produce an art-
work that leaves something of
beauty and depth while enabling
and challenging people to think
and see differently."
Weingarden, whose paintings
have been sold to private collec-
tors, periodically works on com-
mission. Recent projects
completed at his own direction
will be in a one-man show sched-
uled in September at Miller's Art
Center in Ferndale.
The artist's religious back-
ground has been reflected in a
handful of paintings he has done
either on commission or as
for friends. He has presented per-
sonalized representations of Abra-
ham and Isaac, Moses with the
Burning Bush and King David.
"I won't part with certain por-
traits of my wife and certain por-
traits of friends who are dear to
me until I surpass them with new
work," said Weingarden, who also
teaches private students.
He writes short stories as an-
other artistic pursuit, occasional-
ly joining with an informal group
of friends — artists, poets, musi-
cians — to put on multimedia
events in coffeehouses around the
area. One show featured jazz mu-
sicians improvising sounds to a
slide presentation of his paintings.
Although painting is what he
does to support himself, "I don't
like the word 'professional' when
it comes to an artist," Weingarten
said. "I think there's a better word
— vocation or calling, which can
be more richly textured. The
word profession means what I do
for a living, while vocation or call-
ing is what I do for an inner or
spiritual motive in terms of the
contribution I want to make." On
a very personal level, Weingar-
den tries to make a social contri-
bution through his involvement
with the Theosophical Society of
Detroit, a group that explores is-
sues relating to universal broth-
erhood, ethics and the realization
of individual potential. Earlier
this month, he was interviewed
by TV-2 news about his beliefs
concerning other forms of life in
the universe. "I think the art of
portraiture is just beginning," he
said. "As humanity evolves to
greater sensitivity and our
awareness and perceptions deep-
en, the art of portrait painting
will deepen as well." ❑
