mality. I felt elevated by the for-
mality, and I missed it. You
know, showing respect elevates
you spiritually. I left and for a
year we didn't do anything, but
I kept reading every book there
was — Telushkin stuff, every-
thing — like a maniac. The more
I read the more I had to do this
thing, so we went to the Conser-
vative synagogue and spoke to
the rabbi, and I explained to him
that my dad, but not my mom,
was Jewish, and he directed me
into how I had to do this. It's
amazingly difficult; they do not
make it easy."

JN: Well, that's consistent
with your approach.

Dr. Laura: "Exactly. So at the
end of it, it will be infinitely more
meaningful to ine than if they
just handed it over because I was
cute," she giggles.
"And no, Lew is not Jewish;
but yes, he is going through all
the formalities of the conversion.
He's a nice WASP."

Dr. Laura: "He hasn't decid-
ed yet and, frankly, I don't care.
Before a year is up, the house is
going to be kosher and he thinks
that's fine. Totally supportive."
