Other than cost, the only
downside is a lot of sore fingers,
though Mrs. Conrad insists this
abates with time. Today, she
finds doing needlepoint "so re-
laxing. I could sit for hours and
do nothing else.
"Sometimes, when the kids
are in bed I'll stay up until 3
a.m.," she said. "It's kind of ad-
dictive. You know you should go
to sleep, but you just have to fin-
ish one more piece."
Then there's the admiration
that comes with a completed
work.
"To me, they're art," she says.
--- "It's a real gratification when
people come in and comment.
No one comes into the house and
says nothing."
Mrs. Conrad's talents are
evident throughout the home
and not just with her needle-
point. She designed a mirror,
painted and decorated with
small figures of animals and
shapes, that hangs in the
kitchen. She and her husband
Ken created a peaceful Japan-
ese garden in their back yard
and a fireplace in their living
room.
Ken Conrad also built the
family's deck. "He did it all in
just a few weekends," his wife
proudly says.
"We spend all our free time at
Home Depot," Mrs. Conrad ex-
plains.
Once, the two decided they
wanted a completely new look
to their house. After seeing a
neighbor do some of his own de-
molition work, the Conrads took
down a wall in their kitchen,
then rebuilt the entire room, in-
cluding installing new cabinets
and a new floor.
Mrs. Conrad just shakes her
head at suggestions that tear-
ing down a wall is a little, well,
complicated. "All you do is find
the studs," she insists.
When not needlepointing
or redesigning or giving mani-
cures (which she does profes-
sionally), Mrs. Conrad also
"loves to decorate" and admits
freely to being "a total shopa-
holic." Inspired by magazine and
"do-it-yourself" television shows,
she completely remade a ply-
wood table she bought for $35 at
a flea market. The wonder cure
is a spray paint that leaves
whatever it touches looking and
feeling like marble.
She also used a sea sponge
dipped in paint to decorate the
walls in her and her daughters'
rooms. "It looks great," she said.
"Plus it hides all the dirt."
Of course, there are still a few
bare spots around the house.
But Mrs. Conrad is certain to
see that doesn't last long.
She winces as she walks into
an upstairs bathroom. "It's so
plain," she says, almost painful-
ly. "I'm just going to have to do
something in here." ❑
