John Demjanjuk escorted into court in
June 1992.
I
f you believe Yoram Sheftel,
the combative Tel-Aviv lawyer
who won John Demjanjuk his
freedom, the Ukrainian-Amer-
ican accused of being the vicious
Nazi concentration-camp guard
"Ivan the Terrible" is the only one
of the 1,000 clients he has de-
fended in 20 years at the crimi-
nal bar who was truly innocent.
Not, he adds, that he didn't get
some of the others acquitted, too.
Yet, Mr. Sheftel, whose highly
polemical, but documented, ac-
count of Mr. Demjanjuk's seven
years before the Israeli courts
(Defending Ivan the Terrible: The
Conspiracy to Convict Ivan the
Terrible, by Regnery Publishing,
Inc., Washington, DC, 445 pages,
$27.50) is being published this
summer by Regnery in Wash-
ington, D.C., freely admits that
it was luck, as much as his own
tenacity, that saved Mr. Dem-
janjuk from the gallows in 1993.
Convinced that the retired
Cleveland auto worker was the
sadist who whipped 870,000 Jews
into the Treblinka gas chambers,
Israel would have hanged him —
if United States federal investi-
gators had shredded their waste
paper instead of dumping it in the
trash can, and if the Soviet Union
had not collapsed at the strategic
moment.
Mr. Demjanjuk's son and son-
in-law sifted the investigators'
garbage; Mr. Sheftel parleyed his
way into the formerly classified
KGB records of collaborator war
crimes trials. Between them, they
came up with the new documents,
ones that persuaded the Israeli
Supreme Court that there was
reasonable doubt about Mr. Dem-
janjuk's identification as Ivan.
His book, in the British edition,
published two years ago, called it
a show trial. It's hard to disagree,
