University Gets Polakoff Papers New York (JTA) — A prominent Jewish journalist's papers have been donated to the University L_ of Scranton. Joseph Polakoff, a Scranton alumnus, served with the U.S. Information Agency and with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency as its Washington, D.C., bureau chief. He died April 12 at the age of 87. "This is a major acquisition for the University's Weinberg Memorial Library, our first of an individual's papers," said Charles Kratz, director of the li- brary. "The collection goes back to the beginning of his career and includes all of Mr. Polakoffs • work — his columns, his notes, his correspondences, and sever- al audio tapes as well." The more than 200 boxes of material include articles and notes from the journalist's seven-decade career. They are being catalogued before be- ing made available to re- searchers. Single Women Claim Bias Jerusalem (JTA) — The High Court of Justice heard a petition from women's and civil rights groups over alleged discrimina- tion against single women seek- ing to become pregnant through artificial means. The petitions presented stemmed from claims by single women that, unlike their mar- ried counterparts, they were re- quired to undergo psychiatric examinations if they wished to be artificially impregnated. The representative for the state at the court hearing said that even though the exams were part of Health Ministry regulations, during the past three months, all single women wishing to undergo impregna- tion procedures were granted. approval on a case-by-case ba- sis. "We don't want to have a sit- uation where special permission is necessary for each case," said attorney Rachel Benziman of the Israel Women's Network. "We want the policy to be uni- versal," she told Israel Televi- sion. The justices delayed discus- sion of the petition for three months in order to give the Health Ministry time to formu- late and clarify its position in the matter.
