"It is one of the most awesome and
effective propaganda systems that
has ever existed in world history."
Professor Noam Chomsky of
Massachusetts Institute of Tech-
nology, one of the nation's most vo-
cal social critics, has developed a
Propaganda Model showing that
the mass media in the United
States, far from being defiant of
the rich ruling class as generally
thought, are, in fact, supportive
and subservient toward those who
hold power.
The purpose of the media is to
cultivate public stupidity and con-
formity in order to protect the pow-
erful from interference by the
masses.
The idea that the media sys-
tematically distort the news in the
interests of the rich upper class is
a very difficult one to accept.
Therefore, the question must be
asked: To what extent is the Pro-
paganda Model an accurate de-
scription of social reality?
According to Chomsky, 'There
are, by now, thousands of pages of
documentation supporting the
conclusions of the Propaganda
Model. By the standards of the so-
cial sciences, it is very well-con-
firmed and its predictions are
often considerably surpassed. I
would hazard a guess that it is one
of the best-confirmed theories in
the social sciences." (Chomsky's
Politics, by Milan Rai, Verso Press,
1995.)
Chomsky suggests that to gain
a true understanding of the pro-
paganda system, citizens need to
understand their position in soci-
ety: They are considered "enemy
territory" by those who run the
system.
