Rabbi Grossman is president of the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of America, which or- ganized the conference. Religious parties increased their representation in the 120-member Knesset to a total of 23 seats in the May 29 elections. The three parties, which had a total of 16 seats in the last Knesset, joined the coalition assembled by Prime Minister Benjamin Ne- tanyahu. The victory of Netanyahu and the religious parties was a way for voters to oppose those Is- raelis who "began a process of bi-culturalization," Rabbi Gross- man said in his speech. "Israel's raison d'etre is to be a state for Jews and Jewish in every pos- sible way, culturally and reli- giously." Given the degree of assimila- tion plaguing the Jewish com- munity today, he said, "how then could Jews anywhere have accepted an Israel that assimi- lates into the abyss of Western decadence?" The conference, held July 8- 10, was expected to bring to- gether some 500 rabbis from the centrist Orthodox and fervent- ly Orthodox worlds. Sessions at the conference in- cluded explorations of technol- ogy, Jewish education and the future of European Jewry. One session was called "The Centrality of the Office of the Chief Rabbinate of the State of Israel." Is Syria Arming Militants? Jerusalem (JTA) — Adding fuel to government charges that Syr- ia actively supports terrorist groups, the Israel Defense Force chief of staff told a parliamen- tary committee that the Islam- ic fundamentalist Hezbollah movement has received large supplies of arms via Syria. Appearing before the Knes- set Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Lt. Gen. Amnon Shahak said Hezbollah, which has been waging an armed struggle with Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, had received improved Katyusha rockets from Iran, as well as Iranian- produced 240mm shells. Lt. Gen. Shahak added that it was clear that Syria was sup- porting terrorist actions. "We witnessed that a terror- ist organization with head- quarters in Damascus took responsibility for the [June 26] terrorist ambush in the Jordan Valley" in which three Israeli soldiers were killed, Lt. Gen. Shahak said. Earlier this month, Israeli warplanes blasted a site in east- ern Lebanon that was a base for Fatah-Uprising, a Syrian- backed group that claimed re- sponsibility for the June 26 attack. Before setting out for the United States, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his claim that Syria was supporting terrorist actions. He said he hoped to secure U.S. action, including possible sanctions against Syria, to pres- sure Damascus to stop its sup- port for terrorist groups. Israeli Court Convicts Hijacker Jerusalem (JTA) — The Beer- sheba District Court has con- victed an Iranian Air steward of hijacking a domestic airliner to Israel last fall. The court reportedly found the Iranian guilty of air piracy. Sentencing was to be announced at a later date. The steward surrendered to Israeli authorities and request- ed asylum after hijacking a do- mestic Iranian Air flight to an air base in southern Israel last September. The crew and all 176 passen- gers returned to Tehran some 36 hours after landing in Israel. The steward said he had com- mandeered the plane because of what he described as the "un- bearable situation" in his home- land. Organ Donation Investigated Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's Health Ministry has created a committee to look into a report that some hospitals are illegal- ly distributing organs used in transplants. The committee, named at the request of Health Minister Tzachi Hanegbi, is scheduled to present its findings by Sept. 1. The panel's establishment comes after a report in the Is- raeli daily Ma'ariv that donors, most of them poor Palestinians, have been selling one of their kidneys to wealthy Israelis or foreigners. The report said the illegal ac- tivity was taking place at Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Hos- pital and at Herzliya and Assu- ta hospitals.
