summer. Its Cantor Roof Garden
is open until October. "Picasso
and Portraiture" is showing at
the Museum of Modern Art un-

'Destination Shanghai-Refuge
for Stateless Jews, 1938-1948"
(at the Leo Baeck Institute) is
about the life of the 18,000
refugees from Central Europe
who found shelter in China. The
exhibit ends Sept. 27.
A show of the arts of the
African continent is running at
the Guggenheim Museum until
Sept. 29. "Africa: The Art of a
Continent" is the first major sur-
vey of artistic traditions of the
continent with 500 works of art
assembled from collections
around the world.
"Sacred Realm: The Emer-
gence of the Synagogue in the An-
cient World," at the Yeshiva
University Museum until De-
cember, traces the development
of the synagogue from the third
century BCE to 700 CE. The
Lower East Side Tenement Mu-
seum has tours of a 19th centu-
ry tenement, gallery exhibits and
guided neighborhood walks. Cur-
rent exhibits are "Sweatshop
1996," and "Drawing on the Low-
er East Side." The latter shows
works by artists of the 1930s.
Also on the Lower East Side,
Schapiro's Kosher Wine Cellars
holds tours on Sundays at 126
Rivington Street.
Summer is a good time to take
the ferry at Battery Park to the
Ellis Island Museum of Immi-
gration.
Israeli folk dancing for singles
and couples is available at the
92nd Street Y on Wednesdays, at
the Workmen's Circle on Mon-
days and Tuesdays. Simcha
dancing is held on Tuesdays at
Lincoln Square Synagogue. On
Aug. 17, the Y will host an Israeli
Dance Summer Dance
Marathon.
New Yorkers love festivals and
-visitors to the city might enjoy
the Battery Park Festival of
Families on Aug. 24, a cultural
festival celebrating and uniting
families. On Labor Day weekend
there will be the Big Apple Bal-
loon Festival on the Great Lawn
