Nature, with no apparent re-
gard for fairness, demands that
we do more as we age just to
maintain a reasonable level of
fitness and muscle tone.
If we hadn't surmised as much
already, a recent study conduct-
ed by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture shows how dramat-
ically the ability to burn calories
at rest declines with advancing
years.
Comparing men in their 60s
and 70s with those in their 20s,
researchers concluded that the
difference in metabolism could
add up to 2.2 pounds of body fat
over the course of a year for the
seniors.
The researchers said that ag-
ing apparently impairs the abil-
ity to burn calories in excess of
what the body needs. They also
concluded, for better or worse,
that age apparently doesn't de-
prive us of our ability to conserve
calories to compensate for a de-
ficiency.
