cannot do everything, it is
required of us that we do some-
thing. Instead of finding justifi-
cation for non-observance, we
should do as much as we can and
proceed as far as we can on the
path of participation. A message
of encouragement comes from
the Talmud: "He who begins in
the performance of a good deed,
we tell him to continue." He will
learn how to advance, but the be-
ginning is of crucial importance.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Hes-
chel once said, "The level of
Jewish living must never be sta-
tionary ... There is no standstill
in the life of the spirit .. We ei-
ther ascend or go down." The-
question is not whether we ful-
fill every responsibility, every
mitzvah which the tradition con-
tains. But rather are we moving,
however slowly, to greater rev-
erence and understanding, to
greater involvement in the world
of faith.
Are we prepared to at least lis-
ten, to be receptive to the words
and insights of hallowed tradi-
tions? As the sages say, "It is not
incumbent upon us to complete
the work, but we are obligated
to advance it." ❑
