itage Club, a group based in
Dearborn, where the vast ma-
jority of Lebanese-Americans are
Muslims.
Ali Fawaz is a member of the
Heritage Club who agreed to dis-
cuss the billboard but only as an
individual. He explained that
"the leadership of the club is out
of town."
He said the catalyst for the
billboard was Israel's recent
bombing of a United Nations
refugee camp in Lebanon, in
which more than 100 died.
Israel apologized for the inci-
dent, calling it a terrible mistake.
But Mr. Fawaz puts little stock
in Israel's apology.
"We want to make it known
what Israel is doing over there,"
he said. "We have nothing
against the Jews as a religion; it
(the bombing) happened over
there in Israel. What we're con-
cerned about is that Israel is still
occupying part of Lebanon."
He said the move to post the
billboard was directed by the en-
tire Lebanese-American com-
munity, not just the Heritage
Club. Having the sign in Warren
was strictly a matter of avail-
ability.
According to Mr. Fawaz, the
photograph on the sign was tak-
en from United Nations files and
shows a Lebanese child injured
in the Israeli bombing, held in
the arms of a U.N. firefighter.
"We would like you (the Jew-
ish community) to use whatever
pressure you have to get Israel
out of Lebanon," he said.
Neither the ADL nor the Jew-
ish Community Council had
information on the Lebanese-
American Heritage Club, though
ADL Director Richard Lobenthal
noted that the Warren sign
comes on the heels of an adver-
tisement in a national newspa-
per.
Mr. Lobenthal said the ad and
billboard appear to be part of a
campaign, spearheaded by a
right-wing group. It's a new phe-
nomenon, he said, because the
vast majority of Lebanese are
rarely so outspoken against Is-
rael.
Although most in the Jewish
community likely will be trou-
bled and angered by the Warren
sign there are no legal grounds
for having it removed.
"Everybody has a right to put
what he wants on a billboard," a
spokesman for Railease said.
"And of course there are First
Amendment rights. We're just
the vehicle here."
David Gad-Harf of the Jew-
ish Community Council con-
curred.
"While we have no power to
restrict the group's rights to
place such a billboard, it prompts
us and others to educate the
community about the true situ-
ation in Lebanon and the Mid-
dle East as a whole," Mr.
Gad-Harf said. O
