Wasserman and the newspaper
for allowing the ad to run.
"This is the worst example of
the kind of mudslinging that has
characterized American politics
in recent years," said a letter from
Mel and Nena Chudnof of West
Bloomfield. " 'Discrimination' is
not a word to be used lightly, con-
sidering the depth to which we
have suffered from real biases."
Still, Mr. Wasserman was not
without some support.
Attorney Michael Alan
Schwartz, a township trustee,
said he, too, was troubled that
only a handful ofJews were em-
ployed by the township, a com-
munity that is roughly one-third
Jewish. _
"That's a major disparity," he
said. "Normally, you'd like to
have employees of a township
bear some relationship to the
population it serves. rm not mak-
ing accusations; I'm just raising
questions." But Susan Winshall,
a Southfield attorney who spe-
cializes in employment discrim-
ination claims, said the ad was
inappropriate.
THE FACE THAT LAUNCHED A 1000 SHIPS.
Inspired by his original collection for the Italian Navy, Franchi Menotti's marine
sports watch is the most popular face in Italy since the Mona Lisa. The Franchi
Menotti's marine sports collection combines Swiss efficiency with the best of
Italian design and frankly, has been known to make a lot of waves.

"He's using statistics, and he
doesn't seem to know anything
about them," Ms. Winshall said.
"Maybe Jewish people in West
Bloomfield don't apply for jobs in
city government. Maybe they run
boutiques or are doctors or
lawyers. You can't hire Jews if no
Jews have applied.
"I think he's inferring some
kind of discrimination which may
be there or may not be there."
Ms. Hood said she is struggling
with how to respond to the
charges: React angrily and some
will see guilt; stay silent, and oth-
ers will think the charges are
true.
In the end, she decided to an-
swer the accusations head on.
"I think he's going to find that
he made a very big mistake," Ms.
Hood said. ❑
