"Dance music has come back big time," says Fred
Buchalter, Q-95 music director, Q-Crewman and
14-year veteran at the station. "Disco was huge for
us; we now have a Saturday night dance party at In-
dustry ... when they play the Stevie Wonder hustle,
everyone gets up to dance — the Macarena is an ex-
tension of that."

Each week, Vicki Fingeroot gets to-
gether with her nine mahj buddies to
play, well, mahj and recap the morning-
show happenings of Danny Bonaduce, his
wife Gretchen, daughter Isabella, comic
John Heffron's dating hell and other Q-

'e started listening to Danny Bonaduce
because we all grew up with the Partridge
Family,' " says Fingeroot about the group
of 10 women, ages 28 to 43. "Then, 95.5 and
the Q-Crew were sponsoring the Macare-
na Dance Contest at Industry (Nightclub)
— they play the Macarena all the time on
the show.
"When the Macarena was played at a bat
mitzvah I went to, I knew what it was from
hearing it on Q-95's morning show. I
learned the dance at the bat mitzvah."
Currently in the top five on Billboard's
singles chart, "Macarena" was first released
by the duo Los Del Rio in March 1993.
Two years later, an English remix of the
Spanish team's hit was made in Miami by
the Bayside Boys. Their version can be
heard on RCA's Club Cutz , released last
August.

Tonight, 15 finalists will Macarena their hearts (and

judges — anyone who shows up at Industry to vote,
that is.
"My sister dragged me here for the contest," said
Jamie Gibbons of South Lyon at one of the qualifying
rounds. "I'm a virgin Macarena-ite, but I hope she
