Funkadelic, the Beatles — on his
writing, and he prefers to record
using vintage instruments and
amplifiers.
But Kravitz argues that there's
a universality to the music that
negates any charges of stylistic
plagiarism.
"I'm not into categories and
this and that," he says. "I'm just
into the music. I think that peo-
ple in the business and the pub-
lic have (the categories) crammed
down their throats by radio —
they're all into this 'What's alter-
native and this and that and
modern and pop ...'
"To me, it's all music. You get
up there, grab your instrument
and play."
That's the main reason Kravitz

"I was like this
novelty, and that
didn't sit well
with me."

— Lenny Kravit z

accepted an invitation to join this
year's H.O.R.D.E. tour. He, at
first, seems an odd selection for
the traveling festival, which is
rooted in bands that hail from a
post-Grateful Dead school of im-
provisational, jam-oriented per-
formances. Kravitz's records are
a bit more polished and crafted
than those of the usual
H.O.R.D.E. denizens.
But anybody who's seen
Kravitz play live knows that the
careful arrangements of the al-
bums are thrown out once he's on-
stage. "We just go for it, man," he
says. "It's completely different."
So when the H.O.R.D.E. came
calling, Kravitz saw it as an op-
portunity — to get out and play,
to ride his motorcycle around the
country, to camp out with his
daughter.
"This isn't about business,"
Kravitz says. "My album has
been out for awhile, so it's not like
I'm pushing anything. I'm doing
it for fun ... just to have fun. You
really don't get this opportunity
very often."
