Jewel In The Sun

LEWIS ERIC LACHTER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

San Diego's refurbished Temple Beth Israel
was built in 1889.

an Diego, California's
crown jewel, offers scenic
splendor, sights to see
and year round weather
(about 70 degrees and sunny)
that will delight you.
Throw in a very active Jew-
ish community of over 70,000
in this sixth largest city in the
United States.
The story starts in 1850
when the first Jewish settler,
Louis Rose, opened a tannery
in San Diego. In 1869, Temple
Beth Israel was built. Now lo-

cated in the Old Town area, the
beautifully refurbished synagogue
is the second oldest standing to-
day in the West. The lovely syna-
gogue is part of the fascinating
Heritage Park area. Services are
no longer conducted in the shul,
but it is open free of charge to vis-
itors.
There is a busy Jewish Com-
munity Center in the centrally lo-
cated East County, a JCC in
northern Encinitas and another
one in La Jolla. Prominent speak-
ers at special JCC events over the
years have included Kirk Douglas,
Jack Benny and Eleanor Roo-
sevelt.
There are Hillel Centers for the
more than 7,000 Jewish students
in the city's many colleges and uni-
versities. Other active agencies
are the Jewish Community Rela-
tions Council, Jewish Family Ser-
vice, senior centers, day school,

Hebrew homes for seniors and two
campuses for the Jewish Agency.
For women, there are chapters
of Hadassah, Brandeis Women,
National Council of Jewish
Women, ORT and Jewish Women
International.
If you want to attend religious
services, there are five Reform
congregations, eight Conservative,
four Orthodox, one Reconstruc-
tionist, four Chabad groups and
one Society for Humanistic Ju-
daism.
You will find lots of Judaic art
in the area, two Anglo-Jewish
newspapers and tons of great
places to eat.
The 7.8 acre Heritage Park is
dedicated to the preservation of
San Diego's Victorian architec-
ture. In addition to the beautiful
Beth Israel, you can visit a bed
and breakfast inn, an antique
store, a law office and a doll shop.

Balboa Park's over 1,000 acres
takes time to cover but is well
worth it. There are lovely trees,
flowers and the world-famous San
Diego Zoo.
Also in Balboa Park are the
Museum of Man, Globe Theater,
San Diego Museum of Art and
Model Railroad Museum.
One of my favorite outings in
San Diego is driving across the
Coronado Bay Bridge to the island
of Coronado. Another favorite site
is the suburb of La Jolla, 12 miles
north of the city. There are great
shops, a variety of art galleries and
restaurants. La Jolla is the center
of oceanographic and medical re-
search. It is the home of the
Scripps Institution of Oceanogra-
phy and the Jonas Salk Institute.
