The Capitol Steps have become an annual Fourth of July tradition at the Ann Arbor
Summer Festival.

laugh, Newport points out.
"There was time when we
would get a laugh by just saying
the name Tammy Faye Baker,"
she says. "Now, just by men-
tioning Marg Schott, we get a
laugh. We have this thing that
Marg would be a perfect candi-
date for Congress — she can't
keep her mouth shut and doesn't
have a clue what's going on."
However, on occasion, like
other comedians, they'll bomb.
'When global warming was be-
coming a big issue I wrote a bit
about the 'Green, Green Grass
of Gnome, Alaska,' " Newport re-
members. "I went on stage and
talked about how Alaska was
now all beaches and resorts, and
I wore these ridiculous sun-
glasses. We were all cracking up,
but the audience just stared at
us. We quickly retired the rou-
tine."
While most of the material is
the same for every audience,
sometimes, when performing for

a special interest group, they
will tailor their jokes.
'When we do a convention for
doctors and health-care work-
ers, we sing our health-care re-
form song, 'You Can Suture
Yourself At Home,' to the tune
of 'Consider Yourself.' "
Still, she adds, "the Ann Ar-
bor audience is one of the easi-
est to please. The Ann Arbor
audience is very smart and well
informed and they get all the lit-
tle jokes, even the ones that are
tucked away between the lines
and hidden in the middle of our
verbs," she says. "It's not a co-
incidence that we keep coming
back to Ann Arbor year after
year."
