dotted with cafes, shops, restau-
rants and colorful guild houses.
I saw a marvelous giant puppet
parade in the Grand Place re-
cently that I will never forget.
Also, check out the sound-and-
light show which begins every
evening in the Grand Place at 9
p.m.
If you understand French,
there are Jewish-related
lectures and seminars at the
Centre Communautaire Laic
Juifs and the Martin Buber In-
stitute.
There is only one kosher
restaurant in Brussels. It is
called Chez Gilles. To find out
about kosher cuisine and syna-
gogue information, contact the
Consistoire.
A famous 17th century bronze
sculpture near the Grand Place
always attracts tourists and
their cameras. The work is
called the Manneken-Pis Foun-
tain. The fountain sends forth a
continuous stream of water from
the body of a slyly smiling young
boy.
While in Brussels, be sure
to visit Bruge, a tiny town
about one hour's train ride or car
ride away. This gem of a town
with its original medieval
architecture and ancient cob-
blestone streets will astound
you.
Bruge's 13th century market
square features a belfrey that is
272 feet tall with a world famous
47-bell carillon (the main bell
weighs 14,000 pounds). It's a
tough climb to the top, but if you
are up to it, you will get a great
view of the city.
Bruge is the lace capital of
the country, and shoppers
will find perfect presents for
all their friends back home.
When you get tired of shopping,
wonderful restaurants will
welcome you to try a lunch or a
beer.
One final stop in Belgium
is Waterloo, where Napoleon
met his defeat in 1815. Just 10
miles out of Brussels, Waterloo
sites include the Panorama of
the Battle and the impressive
Lion Memorial, the British sym-
bol commemorating the Allied
victory over the French emper-
