Ann Arbor Team
Heads To St. Louis

Gymnast Soars
At Nationals

Ann Arbor has selected 29 ath-
letes to participate in the JCC-
Maccabi Youth Games to be held
in St. Louis Aug. 11-16.
The Detroit Maccabi team will
participate in the games in New
Jersey beginning Aug. 18.
The Ann Arbor team includes
boys' age 13-14 basketball, girls'
volleyball, dance, golf, swimming,
tennis and track. The Ann Arbor
delegation head is Sharon New-
man.

Jodie Rosenberg, a 15-year-old
gymnast from West Bloomfield,
finished third in vault, fifth in
floor exercises and 14 overall at
the U.S. Association of Indepen-
dent Gymnastics Clubs national
championships June 9-15 in
Haines City, Fla.
Jodie had to qualify at the
state and regional levels to be one
of 1,200 competitors at nationals.
Competing in level 10, she scored
9.575 in vault, 9.55 in floor and
36.60 in all-around.

The basketball team includes
Brett Crandall, Adam DeZure,
Matt Eder, Aaron Goldstein, Ai
Hem, Matt Powondra, Eric Pres-
sel, Eli Savit and Jonny Solomon.
Josh Cutler of Farmington Hills
is coaching the team for a fourth
year. He is a graduate student at
Eastern Michigan University.
Girls' volleyball includes sis-
ters Rebecca and Sarah Coudron,
Osnat Gafni, cousins Katie and
Shaina Newman, Joanna Pitt,
Alyse Tankanow, and twins
Elaine and Janet Vineberg.
The volleyball coaches are Uni-
versity of Michigan juniors
Bethany Bump from Sault Ste.
Marie and Shana Rashes of New
York.
Rebecca Greene will compete
in the jazz and modern dance
competitions, and Ilana Singer
will compete in ballet and mod-
ern dance.
In golf, Marc Halman will
coach his sons, Josh and Seth
Halman.
Ann Arbor is sending three
swimmers, Janet Lorang, Emily
Meltzer and Adam Rosenwass-
er, to St. Louis, and Shayna Fell
will compete in track and field.
The tennis team will consist of
Daniel Miller-Sanchez, Justin
Saper and Mark Soskolne, and
will be coached by Mark's moth-
er, Pat Soskolne.

The Israeli national team will
compete in the International Soft-
ball Federation World Champi-
onships at Emerson Park in
Midland July 5-13.
Israel's scheduled games in-
clude 10 a.m. Friday, July 5,
against Argentina; 6 p.m. July 5,
New Zealand; 1 p.m. Saturday,
July 6, Botswana; 8 a.m. Sunday,
July 7, Chinese Taipei; 3 p.m.
Monday, July 8, Venezuela; 8
a.m. Tuesday, July 9, Bahamas;
8:30 p.m. July 9, Japan; 10 a.m.
Wednesday, July 10, South
Africa; 7:45 p.m. July 10, Papua,
New Guinea; noon Thursday,
July 11, Denmark.
The top four teams in the
bracket will play in the champi-
onship rounds July 12-13 at Mid-
land's Chapley Park against the
top four teams in the other brack-
et, which includes the United
States, Canada, Mexico, Aus-
tralia, Netherlands, Czech Re-
public, Puerto Rico, Mariana
Islands, Russia, Pakistan and
Korea.
