Byron, Donald and Robert Canvasser turned unfortunate events into a chance to
help others.
S
ometimes it takes an un-
fortunate series of events
for people to be turned on
to a need.
For the Canvasser brothers,
it was cardiac bypass surgery.
Donald and Robert Canvasser
both underwent the surgery and
have since helped to fund pro-
grams at Henry Ford Hospital's
cardiology department.
Now, Donald, Robert and
their sibling, Byron, have helped
to found the Chest Pain Unit of
the new short stay/clinical deci-
sion unit at Henry Ford Medical
Center in West Bloomfield.
"We have had such good ex-
periences with Henry Ford Hos-
pital and its cardiac program
that we were happy to con-
tribute to its growth," Robert
Canvasser said.
The new unit will be dedicat-
ed to observe patients with
symptoms of a heart attack or
other cardiac conditions. In the
past, many of these patients
would be admitted to the hospi-
tal for closer evaluation.
"We can monitor chest pain
fast, ruling out a heart attack
within 12 hours and allowing
the patient to stay close to
home," said Dr. Gloria Strutz,
one of the unit's coordinators.

six semi-private rooms that can
accommodate up to 12 patients.
It continues to provide 23-hour
post-operative care and also
handles patients from the
emergency depai tment and clin-
ics whose symptoms need ob-
servation to establish a
diagnosis and treatment and to
determine if home care can fol-
low. --
