In 1962, Harry Martin was
brought to Cleveland from San
Diego, and the two became
Martin and Howard, the first in
one of the country's top markets
to do a two-man team.
"We were part of the creators
and builders of show biz as we
know it today," he recalls. A few
years later, ABC brought the
team to Detroit, where they
wanted a "middle-of-the-road
format, Sinatra ... It wasn't what
we excelled at." The Martin-
Howard duo disbanded.
What Mr. Liebman did — and
does — excel at is education.
Rather than remaining a radio
jock, he opened the Specs
Howard school in 1970. There
were four other broadcasting
schools in Michigan, but they
were all correspondence schools.
"My vision of a broadcast school
was hands-on experience. You
can't learn brain surgery by mail;
you can't learn broadcasting by
mail." Even with such differences
in concept, his school was still the
newest and smallest, "the runt. I
had no place to turn and say This
is how it's done.' But I thought,
`What about putting in a studio
where (students) can sit down and
work?' There were two turntables
— this was 1970, don't forget — a
reel-to-reel tape recorder and a mi-
crophone."
Only two students enrolled in
the first 20-week course. By the
end, "both got jobs, but I never got
my money." After that, says Mr.
Liebman, a payment plan was de-
vised.
The following year, enrollment
ballooned to more than 100 stu-
dents, most of whom graduated
and went on to get jobs in broad-
casting.
Today, there are 24 nationally
accredited broadcasting schools.
And as the largest, Specs Howard
has broadened its broadcast spec-
trum from radio and TV to include
video production and an electron-
ics option. Each of Mr. Liebman's
four children has worked at the
school at one time or another.
This year, enrollment is reach-
ing 500. Mr. Liebman says over
90 percent of his students will
work in the field. Local celebrity
graduates include CIDR's Jeff
"Zippy" Crowe, WWJ reporter
Laura Teicher and hundreds of
behind-the-scenes big guys.
If a Lifetime Achievement
Award and well-known alumni
don't impress, how's this: Re-
cently, the school was host to Me-
dia Power, an event which
featured product demonstrations
of the newest in cutting-edge
technology.
"It (was) a huge event," says Al-
isa, daughter and "press agent."
The final touch? "Specs insisted
the affair have a kosher caterer."
