were gracing us with their pres-
ence. I know the attitude; I've
copped it myself a few times.
The vast majority, mainly
mid-30s and up, were clearly get-
ting their money's worth. There
was a lot of making new friends,
re-bonding with people they had
met in years past, and, yes, even
finding true love.
"It really keeps me going," one
Detroiter told me, referring to the
Jewish singles circuit. She'd just
been dipped on the dance floor
by a Floridian wearing a fringe
shirt and holsters.
She also said it angered her
that Jewish singles events get
such a bad rap. Personally, she
was thankful for the cultural ca-
maraderie and the opportunity
to meet singles her age.
Even my friend expressed a
similar sentiment at the begin-
ning of the night. "It's so nice to
know that for the next few hours
I won't have to explain to anyone
why I don't believe in Jesus."
Remember, we live in the
Bible Belt.
Having witnessed this crowd,
I can report with confidence that
singles-event phobia apparent-
ly retreats with experience.
Members of the post-post grad
age are not half as embarrassed
to actively seek out new friends,
even spouses. They've been
humbled, as some of us kids will
be, by the reality that making
quality social connections is
damn near impossible these
days. So why not take advan-
tage of a convenient mixer or
two?
Even I will admit to having a
decent time at Southfork. The
corn bread was outstanding and
the people watching a B-plus.
Better yet, I met a couple of
seemingly nice Dallasites who
promised to help me expand my
currently dismal social circle.
And who knows what might
come of that? Not that I'm look-
ing ... . Ll
