Tuesday and Thursday nights
and every other weekend.
'When I need to talk about my
problems, it's hard to talk to my
married or single friends," Mr.
Wine said. "I don't have many
single friends with kids. Guys go-
ing through the same thing can
relate."
Most programs in and outside
the Jewish community address
the needs of single mothers and
touch on single-parenting issues.
"The groups I've found (for sin-
gle dads) seemed to be more
anger oriented," said Ken Ko-
rotkin, who has joint custody of
his three daughters, who live
with him. "I'm trying to deal with
practical daily matters, and I
don't want to be in a group situ-
ation focusing on anger. I want
to go to the next step."
Beginning July 11, Mr. Ko-
rotkin and 13 other single fathers
will begin tackling what he de-
scribes as the more pertinent is-
sues of single-parenting.
"We are looked at differently,"
Mr. Korotkin said. "You know
people talk about you: 'Look at
that family,' or 'Those girls live
with their dad. Isn't that unusu-
al?' I used to worry about
whether parents of my daugh-
ters' friends would let their kids
sleep over because the only adult
in the house was a single man.
"I'm not a weekend dad, and
it's hard juggling responsibility.
Everyone thinks you're crazy for
doing it. I try to work, volunteer,

be there for my kids and occa-
sionally think about having a life
for myself"
Mr. Korotkin does not want to
be segregated because of his sin-
gle-parenthood status, and he
does not want his daughters to
feel uncomfortable.
After his divorce, Mr. Korotkin
began inviting others over for the
Jewish holidays, barbecues and
other events. Soon the invitations
were reciprocated.
When the program begins, Mr.
Korotkin and the group will dis-
cuss traditional roles and rules
of fatherhood and how to main-
tain a sense of family and con-
tinue the celebration and
observance of Jewish holidays.
Further sessions will be flexible,
addressing the group's needs.
JEFF, which provides support
services and social programs
through its Institute for Single
Jewish Mothers, formed a focus
group last year to discuss par-
enting from a single father's per-
spective.
"These fathers didn't want a
workshop where they would sit
around and complain about their
ex-wives," Ms. Hertzberg said.
"We want to set the tone that it's
OK to be a man and address is-
sues that were traditional
women's issues." ❑

heological arrogance."
"Outrage." "Unacceptable."
Dick Lobenthal of the
Anti-Defamation League
uses strong words to describe the
action of the Southern Baptist
Convention two weeks ago reaf-
firming Jews as targets of Bap-
tist conversion efforts.
Ronnie Schreiber of Jews for
Judaism, a group in the front
lines opposing efforts to convert
Jews, is not surprised by the Bap-
tist policy. Mr. Schreiber says
Southern Baptists are one of
more than 600 groups worldwide
that try to convert Jews. And the
Baptists have spent millions of
dollars in the effort.
The resolution was brought be-
fore their New Orleans conven-
tion, Mr. Schreiber says, because
of an internal conflict between
liberals calling for interfaith un-
derstanding and conservatives
defending longtime policies.
The Southern Baptists had a
missionary stationed in Detroit
for years, and the group is one of

the leaders in utilizing Jewish
words and symbols in its mis-
sionary efforts, Mr. Schreiber
says.
"What is disconcerting," says
Mr. Schreiber, "is that they feel
comfortable enough to make a
public declaration and not expect
a public reaction from the Jew-
ish community or not be con-
cerned about that reaction.
Maybe that should serve as a
wake-up call."
He says most Jews don't con-
sider conversion a major issue be-
cause it affects, at most, a quarter
of a million Jews. "But if 250,000
Jewish kids got cancer, we'd see
it as a major issue," he says.
Mr. Lobenthal makes veiled
comparisons between the South-
ern Baptists' resolution and the
Nazis. "In the name of salvation
of Jews, if they (the Baptists) had
their way, there would be no
more Jews. Their position is not
as violent as some groups in the
past, but they want the same
end."
