he people of Brussels say
the food is better than that
served in Paris. They are
also proud of their many
green parks, pretty lace and de-
licious chocolate.
As Jews, we feel the Belgians
also have reason to be proud of
their treatment of our people
during World War II.
At the beginning of the war,
there were 30,000 Jews in Brus-
sels. Many left for France before
the Germans invaded Belgium.
In 1942, deportations to the
death camps started. About half
of Brussels' pre-war population
died in the Holocaust.
But the number could easily
have been much higher. It
was the Belgian constitution
and resistance movement that
saved many Jews. The consti-
tution never permitted mention
of religion on documents of
civil status, so the Germans
had a harder time identifying
Jews.
As for the Belgian resistance
movement, the fighters actively
participated in Jewish rescue ef-
forts. There was also a Jewish
resistance group which devel-
oped an extensive network for
hiding Jewish children and pub-
lished an underground newspa-
per.
According to historians,
the Catholic Church in the coun-
try and the royal family
actively defended the Jewish
population during the war.
Queen Elizabeth was the first
member of a royal family to vis-
it Israel.
However, going back further
in history, the Belgians made
life miserable for the Jews in
the 14th century. Our people
were blamed for the country's
Black Death epidemic, and
many Jews were killed.

Many years later, under
Napoleon, the Jews fared better;
and the Consistoire Central Is-
raelite, Belgium's first repre-
sentative Jewish body, was
founded.
When Belgium, which is
today a constitutional monar-
chy, achieved independence in
1830, religious freedom was de-
creed.
The current Jewish popula-
tion in Brussels (about 25,000)
work in the leather, textile and
clothing industries. Antwerp,
with its 13,000 Jews, is the Bel-
gian city where our people dom-
inate the diamond business.
The two cities and their
Jewish populations are very
different. The Jews of Brussels
are more secular, Zionist and
French-speaking. The Antwerp
group is mostly Orthodox, Yid-
dish-speaking and involved in
the diamond trade.
Judaism is legally recognized
by the government, and rabbis
are paid by the state. Belgium
also subsidizes Jewish day
schools where both secular
and religious subjects are
taught.
The Consistoire Israelite de
Belgique, which represents the
Jews in their dealings with the
government, is located at 2 Rue
Joseph Dupont. It is a good place
to go with questions about cur-
rent Jewish activities and events
in the country.
Brussels is a great city
for walking. If you get tired,
there are countless cafes at
which to take a coffee, tea or
beer break. In good weather, the
cafes have chairs and tables out-
doors so you can watch the pass-
ing parade.
The best place in town to peo-
ple-watch is in the market
square called the Grand Place
