He had started out in architecture, but was switching to business ad- ministration and was about to start work with a prominent Boston business consultancy firm. He had large ambitions for a ca- reer in the private, not public, sec- tor. On that day, Palestinian and West German terrorists were holding over 100 Israeli and Jew- ish hostages at the airport in En- tebbe, Uganda. The hostages had been passengers on an Air France jet hijacked eight days earlier en route from Tel Aviv to Paris. The terrorists threatened to kill them unless Israel and other countries released over 100 of their jailed comrades. With the deadline approach- ing, Israel responded with the now-legendary raid on Entebbe. Israeli troops made a surprise landing at the airport, killed some 45 terrorists and Ugandan sol- diers, and freed all the hostages except two who were accidental- ly killed in the assault. The lead force in the raid was Sayeret Matcal (Border Recon- naisance), the most exalted of the Israeli army's elite units. The only Israeli soldier killed in the oper- ation was Sayeret Matcal's com- mander, Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu, Binyamin Ne- tanyahu's older brother. In the book, Self-Portrait of a Hero: The Letters of Jonathan Ne- tanyahu, Yonatan wrote to Binyamin in 1967 that "You're the only true friend I ever had." Their uncle, Professor Chaim Mileikowski, has been quoted as saying that for weeks after En- tebbe, Binyamin Netanayhu could barely swallow food. In a television interview about two years ago, Mr. Netanyahu, in a clear reference to his brother's death, said he cried heavily over it, and had not cried since. The death of his brother was the decisive event in Mr. Ne- tanyahu's life. It took him into the public arena, and began a chain of events that led to his election as prime minister. He and his younger brother, Iddo, spent the next two years editing the book of Yonatan's let- ters, which immediately became a basic text of Israeli inspirational literature. But the most fateful of Mr. Ne- tanyahu's post-Entebbe activities was his organization of the Jonathan Institute, which aimed to fight terror on the political front. (
